The roots of Grosse Savanne run deep. Acquisition of the property by the Chalkley family dates all the way back to the late 1800’s. This area, once thought of as a wasteland, was rich in flora and fauna. It was not until the mid-1900’s that recreational sportsmen began to appreciate and understand the value of this complex ecosystem we now call “Sportsman’s Paradise”. In 1995 the current heirs to this special property, the Leach family, decided to create a venue to allow the rest of the world to enjoy what they had been entrusted to keep and manage. Thus, the creation of Grosse Savanne Lodge began.
The building that we refer to as the Lodge is nestled in the Southwest corner of Louisiana in the heart of Cameron Parish (county). Its location at the end of the highway in a small rural settlement referred to as “Big Pasture”, gives it the name “Grosse Savanne” when translated to the French language. Easily accessible from Interstate 10, the Lodge is midway between Houston and New Orleans approximately 20 minutes south of Lake Charles, LA. This 12,000 square foot mansion in the marsh
elegantly sits elevated above the landscape providing the best possible amenities for you to use as a base camp to explore the property.
The Lodge at Grosse Savanne is no doubt an impressive structure to behold. But, what makes this place truly special is the 50,000 acres of land that surrounds it. Our expanse of eco-diversity at Grosse Savanne is second to none. Fresh marshes, brackish marshes, coastal prairies, and agricultural lands are all found on the property.

In addition, our close proximity to Calcasieu Lake and the near coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico only add to the outdoor recreational opportunities. That is why we say; there is no other place in the world where you can experience a combination of world class water-fowling, fresh and saltwater fishing, alligator hunting, and eco-tours out of the same door, the same day.
